This year we are learning in a large space that is made up of two classrooms. We are enjoying having many different places to learn but we realised we needed a good way to identify them.
Ms O'Neil and Edie decided to name the two different rooms 'North Island' and 'South Island'. The students had the task of naming each specific learning area after a town in New Zealand. North Island towns in the North Island and South Island towns in the South Island.
(For those of you familiar with the school, the North Island used to be 'The Orchard' and the South Island was Room 12.)
The naming process...
In groups we looked at maps of New Zealand, we became familiar with some of the towns and places and discussed what places we already knew about.

We then decided as a group which place we would present to the rest of the class. We thought about why the place would be a good name for the learning area. We thought about what linked the learning area to that place in New Zealand and we thought about what arguments we could use to persuade the rest of the class. We recorded these as a group.
We also did some research on the Chromebooks of the places we had chosen, we looked for interesting facts about those towns that we didn't already know. These are our notes on each town.
Presenting our arguments
We presented our arguments to the class, some of us felt quite nervous about doing this but we all supported each other and helped each other out.
This group did not all agree on one town, half the group wanted to name the space 'Raglan' and the other three chose 'Hobbiton'. They provided arguments for both and the class had to vote. Hobbiton won...the arguments were outstanding.
