A visit from volcanologist Adrian Pittari

Today we were very lucky to have a visit from the volcanologist Adrian Pittari who Edie worked with last year at the University of Waikato. Thanks for coming Adrian!

He knows A LOT about volcanoes and showed us lots of different types of volcanic rocks: obsidian, lava bomb, rock from a gas and ash eruption and rock with olivine from the mantle.

Volcanic rock, the swirls come from the gas and ash mixing (like when you)before

Adrian also showed us a meteorite that was found which is about 4.6 billion years old, and is the same material as the core of the earth, iron and is magnetic, you can see the magnets we stick to it here.

Meteorites are magnetic

We learnt that pumice and obsidian are the same rock but pumice has gas in it, so it looks very different. Adrian showed us how to make 'obsidian and pumice' out of toffee and hokey pokey. He mixed sugar and golden syrup together and microwaved it so it was very hot, then he poured the toffee and added baking soda (gas) to the mixture which made the pumice, it was fantastic, and very tasty! Have a look at the photos below.

Mixing up the sugar and golden syrup

Obsidian (toffee) and pumice (hokey pokey, the same ingredients except pumice is full of gas

Toffee...obsidian

Very similar pumice and hockey pokey (full of gas)

Hokey pokey or pumice? This is the hokey pokey...

and here are some more pictures of the visit
