Making crystals

We have a lot of members of Room 11 who are interested in rocks, gems and crystals, so last week we decided to try making our own crystals.

We did some research and then tried out mixing boiling water with salt, epsom salts, aluminium sulphate, borax and sugar.

We kept dissolving our substance in the jar by stirring it and when the substance would no longer dissolve we knew the water was saturated (no more substance could dissolve). We then hung a pipe cleaner or string into the solution and waited...

So far only the borax solution has made good crystals, but we are being patient...

Important vocabulary: dissolve, saturate, stir, epsom salts, aluminium sulphate, patience
